Third StoRIES Summer School 2025

ree

The Third StoRIES Summer School took place in Trondheim, Norway, between 10-12 June bringing together over 50 participants from across Europe for a week of exchange and collaboration under the theme “Hybrid Energy Storage for a Sustainable Future.” Co-organised by SINTEF Energy Research and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), the programme provided a relevant platform for early-stage researchers, professionals, and students to deepen their understanding of hybrid energy storage systems in the context of Europe’s energy transition.

Led by coordinators Dr. Pınar Arpaçay and Myriam E. Gil Bardají, the Summer School offered a comprehensive agenda that combined lectures from leading experts in the field, interactive workshops, and site visits to energy storage facilities. Participants had the opportunity to engage directly with current research, explore practical applications, and collaborate on innovative ideas addressing both the technical and socio-economic aspects of energy storage.

One of the most applicable elements of the week was the interaction between participants, which encouraged interdisciplinary thinking and peer learning. These efforts resulted in a series of presentations evaluated by a panel, with the Best Group Presentation award going to Filiz Hoplamaz, Felix Schofer, Irena B., Lazher Mejdi, Masoome Maroufi, Matteo Battaglia, Syed Safeer Mehdi Shamsi, and Elham Abohamzeh. The Best Poster Award was given to Margaux Gouis (First place), and jointly to David Pérez Gallego and Philipp Rentschler (Second place), recognising the quality their research communication.

Special thanks were extended to organisers Roberto Scipioni, Fride Vullum-Bruer, and Odne Burheim for their dedication throughout the event. Their efforts, along with the enthusiastic participation of all attendees, created an inspiring environment that fostered new connections and collaborative ideas in hybrid energy storage.

As the Summer School came to an end, participants left with renewed motivation, practical insights, and a strengthened sense of community. The week offered not only deeper knowledge on the role of hybrid storage in the energy transition but also concrete takeaways on how to link research initiatives to real-world impact—highlighting the continuing relevance of education and dialogue in shaping Europe’s sustainable energy future.
