About the event
The “Interactive Workshop: Setting-up a common base for sustainability assessment to unlock the potential applications for hybrid energy storage systems” will be held on the 6th of December in Vienna. The event is organized in the frame of WP4: ‘Supporting the transition towards a climate neutral continent’ of the StoRIES project and will take place at the premises of the Austrian Institute of Technology in Vienna.
The workshop is part of the 3-day event ‘Hybrid Energy Storage Days’ jointly organised by the EERA JP ES and StoRIES project.
Description of the workshop (See agenda)
In line with EU’s Green Deal climate neutrality targets by 2050, several regulations are released to promote expansion of renewable energy sources (RES) capacities. To do so, sustainable energy storage technologies are required to meet the grid service requirements due to the changing generation and demand patterns caused by RES covering various reaction time, storage duration, and capacities. However, energy storage technologies including all their life cycle stages (from raw materials to end-of-life) have implications on society, environment and economy.
Within this context, one goal of the StoRIES project is to define and prioritize sustainability impacts and related key performance indicators (KPIs) for energy storage technologies and to identify hybridization potentials within different application fields. For this, the engagement of relevant stakeholders and a common understanding of KPIs and their importance are essential components.
Within the workshop, a decision-support software (KIT MCDA Tool) will be introduced and used to achieve the named goal. The participants (hereby stakeholders) will be able to interact with a pre-defined multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) model for assessing sustainability assessment of energy storage technologies for short-, medium-, long-term applications. Such interaction includes: first, individual validation and weighting the of proposed KPIs for different energy storage applications. Second, discussing in small groups the weights of KPIs and provide final weights that represent the group discussion. Finally, results will be presented and discussed to show participants how their input influences the model. The MCDA KIT tool allows to elicitate the preferences of involved stakeholders via online surveys and to directly visualize the ranking results for a selected set of energy storage technologies. The results from this workshop are intended to be used for sustainability assessment of energy storage technologies and hybrid storage systems in different TRL levels.
The interactive workshop will be structured in four different sessions. The participants will discuss different topics related to hybrid energy storage systems in different groups. During registration, participants were asked to give brief information about their areas of expertise in order to better organise the groups.
The four different sessions will be organised as follows:
Session 1: Setting the scene (09:15 - 10:45)
- Welcome by AIT Head (15')
- Introduction of the workshop: goal and scope (15')
- Explanation of MCDA method (15 ')
- Description of use case: alternatives, criteria and evaluation matrix (45')
Session 2: Group work (11:15 – 13:15)
- Introduction to MCDA KIT Tool and Plug-In for stakeholders’ integration (10')
- Individual work: feedback on pre-defined sustainability KPIs and weights via plug-in (mobile phones or laptop) (20')
- Group work: reflection/discussion on sustainability KPIs in small groups (60')
- Presentation of outcomes from group work activity (~3 min per group) (30')
Session 3: Group work (15:15 - 17:00)
- Group work: weights elicitation in small groups via plug-in (60')
- Discussion/presentation of group work insights (45')
Session 4: Results (17:30 – 18:30)
- Presentation of final weighting set and ranking (30')
- Evaluation of the activity (15')
- Closing remarks, next steps (15')
The whole workshop will take place in person. Make sure to bring a device with which you can scan QR codes: phone, ipad, laptop, etc.
Dinner: Please note that the dinner will be FREE of charge for participants. However, to comply with vendor guidelines, a fee of €10 will be charged to those registered for the dinner who do NOT come. In case of cancellation, please inform us as soon as possible.
