The Sustainable Islands conference presented the STORIES project results, present successful cases of hybrid RES-energy storage systems and their integration in islands. It highlighted future perspectives in the EU for the introduction of RES storage systems in islands.

Grid issues are a major barrier for higher penetration of RES in the EU, especially in remote or outlying regions, including islands. The penetration of RES in weak electricity grids could increase if energy storage methods were adopted. The aim of the STORIES project is to make concrete suggestions for changes in policies and regulations covering RES installations on island grids so as to promote energy storage solutions to increase RES penetration.

The STORIES project has:
  • focused on electrical grid access related to the low penetration of RES in islands;
  • addressed economic aspects by comparing conventional power systems with hybrid RES-energy storage systems;
  • encouraged the engagement of local key market actors in the implementation of RES electricity installations in remote or outlying regions;
  • assessed policy and legislative issues related to the distributed electricity generation;
  • examined the effect of adopting a favorable pricing framework for RES electricity installations integrated with storage technologies;
  • conducted a targeted dissemination campaign of its results, and
  • developed a roadmap for the adoption of RES-energy storage technologies by policy makers.
